One Christmas when I was a kid, I found my present -- a Pittsburg Steelers outfit, #88 -- hidden in my mother's closet. This was several weeks before Christmas, and it was no accident that I stumbled across it. Faced with a dilemma, my mom invented a new holiday rule. If Santa didn't make the present disappear overnight, I could keep it. To give Santa as little scope for action as possible, I slept on top of the outfit, using the box it came in as a pillow. In the morning, it was gone.
The reason I'm remembering that story is that Rethinking Worldview just showed up on my doorstep. It's sitting on a stack of other books at the edge of my desk, and when I glance away I keep expecting it to disappear. Hopefully the newness will wear off soon and I won't have to keep checking on it!
As the reality sinks in, there are some people I'd like to thank. At Crossway, Geoff Dennis first asked for the proposal and Justin Taylor asked again when I dragged my feet. Al Fisher gave me the good news that the book would be published, and Lydia Brownback was a gifted and supportive editor throughout the process. Michele Bennet, the publicist at Crossway, is a fellow Union University alum and has been a great help. Thanks to all of you for believing in the project.
And I have to thank all my colleagues at Worldview Academy. I'd have never written the book without their encouragement. Jeff Baldwin invited me to join the faculty and read early drafts of the book, assuring me that I wasn't too crazy. I've bounced ideas off of Jay Winslow and Brandon Booth (and stolen from them both, as well). If it hadn't been for Mike Schutt, I would never have known what a good book proposal should look like. Randy Sims, head coach at Worldview Academy, has really supported the project, and kept Bill Jack and Dell Cook from making too much fun of me.
The book is dedicated to Laurie, my wife, who believes in me much more than I believe in myself. The good ideas included in the book that weren't cribbed from other authors were probably hers; the bad ideas are my own.
Now that Rethinking Worldview has made its physical presence known, it looks like everything is on schedule for the October 12 release.
